15/12/06 13:20:04 | @deci: if you ask them directly why it's so hard to spread steam authentication servers around the world (like i did) you get no answer. Europe has got more active FPS players than the US meanwhile, but it doesn't seem to matter.
In Bellevue they prefer to develope games like "The Ship" that at least 10 people on this planet have been impantiently waiting for (which is so far matching the maximum number of simultanous players) or implement features like DWP or ingame ads to drive people nuts. |

It seems to me there are rarely problems with the authentication servers, so spreading them around the world and therefore increasing security risk and costs (as they have to be externally located) might not be worth that.
From a business point of view I can understand that, just to say we at SteamBans also have to be careful with who we let host what.
And just for the record, The Ship was (and is) developed by Outerlight and it is only offered through STEAM as it is a easy content manager (updates etc), as many other games.
Side note, I have played the Ship and I like the concept and there were definitely more than 10 people playing that game so I am inclined to believe the stats are not working properly.
I hope that might give explations to answer your question. |

In my opinion a worldwide distribution and gaming network should provide system redundancy in all parts. This is especially true for an enforcing system like Steam.
Currently people can't use the software they paid for because of the lack of this system redundancy. And this is not because there are no professional hosting and housing partners in europe. Compare it to the global DNS system and imagine what the internet would be like if we still had this completely US-centric. |

I'm in California receiving a Master Server Authentication error just for new account creation and no such user exists for existing account login grrrrr. After an hour of searching, weirdly steambans.com popped up in my head. Now I am little relieved to find the cause of this problem.
I know other users are going nuts now. Even when going to steampowered.net the support/forum link are down as well. |

The password retrieval email server is still down, im in the US and steam started to work around 21:15Eastern yesterday (it's saturday 10:30Eastern right now) they started with the 0:0 steam auth servers at that time, as for the 0:1 auth servers i have no clue. what i do known is i was without offline mode for over 8 hours and this has made me unhappy as it forced me to spend quality time with the wife to which i feel i will never get over this.. it has scarred me for life! :p GL to all happy Gaming Merry Christmas and happy new year ( Sorry for dbl post it cut most of my message off ) |
